What an adorable car! I’d prefer four doors, however...

That thing is probably about as unsafe as any car ever was.

I used to have its cousin, a Singer Gazelle. A pretty, but fairly unremarkable car.

This isn’t mine, but it looked just like this.

Imp story:

I’m gonna guess I was around 10-12 at the time. I got dropped off a friends house. His father had 2 Imps-one shitty and the other even worse. We’re out playing in the backyard when the father says “lets go for a ride!” We pile probably 6 kids in the car. He tries to start it-it cranks + cranks + wears the battery down. “Awww”. “Push me up the driveway!” ( The driveway went uphill towards the road.) We get out+ push-jumping out of the way while he pop starts it in reverse-just barely stopping before hitting the house. Broooooom! It starts-smokes-sounds like hell. We all pile in. You can tell the car is underpowered + overloaded. 1st gear takes like 2 minutes. He turns down a dirt road. I goes downhill-so we were screaming along in 3rd (probably 30mph) and the road goes back uphill. It slows in 3rd-downshift to second-slowing more-down to first-slowing-slowing..”quick-push!” We jump out while the car was still in motion to keep it moving. Once 2 mph turns to 3-then four, we all try to jump in to not lose speed. We cruised around the dirt roads having a blast at 20 mph. I think we even had to stop for a repair or two.

I’m sure my folks had no idea what going to this friends house was like.

While I’m remembering + typing this, it all seemed normal for 1970. If this happened today The guy would have been locked up for child endangerment.

Guy on our street had Studebakers ... he kept them up LONG after Studebaker was an afterthought. A wagon and a sedan. Knew his kid - he had no explanation.

It’s 15 years later - going to visit my mom, driving a rental car, and I passed by the house. In the driveway - an old AMC Pacer wagon, and a Hornet that was nearly as old. The guy had clearly reverted to type. One loser brand replaced by another.
